National Curriculum

The National Curriculum sets out the most important knowledge and skills that every child has a right to learn

  • is a flexible framework given to teachers by government, so that all school children are taught in a way that is balanced and manageable, but hard enough to challenge them and meet their diverse needs
  • gives standards that measure how well children are doing in each subject - so teachers can celebrate achievement and plan to help them do even better.

The DfES Parent Centre website has all the information you need to find out what your child is doing at school and to help them with it.  It explains what schools teach and why, gives answers to some of the most common questions parents ask about the curriculum and gives tips for helping with learning.  The National Curriculum isn't just for teachers and schools; it belongs to everyone.  This site will help you understand it, so that you can help your child.
